He's Been Bit!

I am excited (and a bit proud) to say that I have got Josh hooked on family history AND blogging. Our Stake has expressed the goal to have every member go on new.familysearch.org to prepare at least one name to do the temple work for this year. Josh accepted the challenge and has officially been bitten by the family history bug. He has even started his own blog Family History of Sarah K. and J. Eddy Martin to record his research.

It has been a lot of fun to work together on his research as well as side by side on my own. Josh even figured out how to better share the images of the documents using scribd.com so that they can be viewed up close on the blog as well as saved at higher resolution from the blog. We have been up late almost every night this week doing family history and it has been great fun to share two of my interests with my best friend.

Here's to happy tree climbing!

Shelby Dillman with Sources

My great great uncle has been illusive until this past year when I have been able to find him in multiple records pulling together a lot of information him.

Helen Condon Dillman's death certificate (Missouri State Archives) Shelby's wife.
From the death certifcate I learned: Shelby was 40 years old in 1940, pointing to his birthday in the year 1900.

Shelby's WWII enlistment record (ancestry.com)which gave me the following information:
Name: Shelby Dillman
Birth Year: 1900
Race: White Citizen
Native State: Illinois
State of Residence: Missouri
County or City: Crawford
Enlistment Date: 16 Sept 1942
Enlistment State: Missouri

Grade: Private
Terms of Enlistment: Enlistment for the duration of the War or other emergency, plus six months, subject to the discretion of the President or otherwise according to law
Component: Selectees (Enlisted Men)
Source: Civil Life

Civil Occupation: General Farmers
Marital Status: Widower without dependents

Weight: 117

Birth date and Death date from a book I searched at the Family History Library in Salt Lake City, Utah:
Cemeteries of Crawford County Missouri 977.862 v3w
Meramec Twp, Pleasant Point Cemetery “this cemetery is located on Highway U”
Dillman:
Shelby Jan 27 1900 – Dec 15 1964

If you go to the next image on Ancestry.com it turns out to be Shelby's older brother Russell Dillman born Sept 27, 1897 who registered on the same day. The handwritting on the card is drastically different from that on Shelby's which suggests to me that they filled out the cards themselves but that is just a guess.

Interesting info from this census:
It gives a complete picture of the family, including all four children.
The birthplaces of parents and children help to place the family in certain states particularly Missouri, Illinois, Ohio, and Indiana (only their first child was born in Missouri).
Occupation given as Railroad Engineer.
