1840 Illinois Census: Daniel Family

The 1840 Census only includes the name of the Head of Household and then tally marks for the family members in age groups separated by gender. With the help of information from Land Patents and the 1850 Census, I am fairly certain that this is the correct Levi Daniel though once again the census gives the name differently as "Daniels".

I came across the issue of having more tally marks than known family members. I have tried to link some of the tally marks to the names I have and estimated ages. I am left with a female between the ages of 50 and 60, possibly a mother of either Louisa or Levi, and four children. It is a stretch for Louisa (b 1807) to be a mother to a 15-20 year old, let alone two making me believe that there are children in the household that are not hers. It is also possible that there are children of Louisa's that I do not know about.

50 and under 60: 1

Note: Bassel is boarderline, he could go in the under 5 category by some information. The 1850 census gives his age as 16 so I put him in the 5 and under 10 category.

Another name of possible interest on the page: George Bishop

*** Read the comments.  Gladys has given her interpretation that accounts for most of the other individuals in the household which includes extended family.

  1. My interpretation:
    1 male (1801/1810)
Head of household [ Levi (ca 1803)]
    1 male (1821/1825)
    Brother-in-law [ John BISHOP(1822) ]
    1 male (1826/1830)
    son1 [ John (1828)]
    1 male (1831/1835)
    son2 [ Bazel (ca 1834)]
    1 male (1836/1840)
    ? [ possible son3 (unknown (1836/1840) ] ?
    1 female (1781/1790)
    mother-in-law [ Keziah WILLIAMS/BISHOP/WHITLEY (1790/1792)]
    1 female (1801/1810)
    wife [ Louvica (1807) ]
    1 female ( 1821/1825)
    sister-in-law [ Keziah BISHOP (1820)]
    1 female (1826/1830)
    daugh1 [ Louvisa (ca 1827)]
    1 female (1831/1835)
    daugh2 [ Keziah M. (1831)]
    2 female (1836/1840)
    daugh3 [ Editha Adaline (ca 1837)], [ Louisa Emiline (1839)]

Thomas Whitley/Whiteley, husband of Keziah (1790/1792), died 13 June 1832 & I believe that Levi took Louvica's family in for awhile.
